Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 10 – Day 211 – 7/15/2023

“No traveler, whether a tree lover or not, will ever forget his first walk in a sugar-pine forest. The majestic crowns approaching one another make a glorious canopy, through the feathery arches of which the sunbeams pour, silvering the needles and gilding the stately columns and the ground into a scene of enchantment.” ~ John Muir ~

this traveler journeyed into the land of enchantment today, not the state of New Mexico where i celebrated my Chiron return 22 years ago, this pilgrimage was an inner one to the deep self, to a way of engaging with the world founded on a visceral sense of belongingness in a many layered world… in this land of enchantment, we participate wholeheartedly and profoundly in the adventure of the magical mystery tout of life… in this land, we are intuitive, we embrace wonder, we are fully engaged in the imaginal realm and deeply rooted in place and community flourishing on the pathless path of heart and meaning respecting the consciousness of children as holy fools and all our wild relations engaged with the small, the slow, the local picking up our thread of the unraveling cosmos to re-create an even more beautiful world by falling in love again and again…

thank you for sharing the journey of ever deepening into rainbow mystery…

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 10 – Day 210 – 7/14/2023

on this world orca day alerting us to the vulnerability of this species, i see, in my imagination, a poignant image of  Tahlequah, the mourning mother who carried her dead calf  for seventeen days and it takes me to another image of years ago, this one of a mare gone wild searching all over for her colt who was stillborn and it brings me close to home… is there anything more painful than experiencing the loss of a child you have carried inside your heart?

as Tahlequah suffered through this momentous loss swimming over 1000 miles with her dead calf raised above her, she was never alone… her tribe was always close by giving her food, comfort and support… her six kindred sisters forming a seamless circle of love show us all what it means to hold space and compassionately offer support during those moments of heartbreak we all suffer, we all endure…

this circle of crones, these astonishing beings of light inspired me to learn that the elder sisters of the orcas are the ones who know where to find soul and physical nourishment and so are vital for the life of the tribe… once again, these wisdom keepers offer all relatives a loving way to be…

and so, today as i am teleported back to the sacred space of Talequah and feeling so in awe of her actions many moons ago, actions still offering so much wisdom in this epic epoch of mutation when nature messages us over and over to radically change our ways, to root ourselves in a new/old way of walking home together in solidarity and support real-eye-sing we are onebody with all our relations belonging to each other interdependent on each other…

may we, like our orca elders, our sisters, know where the feeding grounds of true self nourishment are and how to be with and guide others during these times of  heartbreak to the still waters of solace and the deep peace of the running wave…

ps: Talequah now swims with her latest offspring as the miraculous cycle of birth, death, rebirth turns eternally in the ocean of being…

WORLD ORCA DAY MISSION:
World Orca Day is a celebration of the species.
We aim to raise awareness of orca in the wild and the threats they face.
Our overarching goal is to increase protection for the species and, as a result, the oceans.
We strive to support a movement that brings together people who are interested in, and who advocate for, orca.

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 10 – Day 209 – 7/13/2023

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”

~ Albert Einstein ~

let’s take this moment of eternity, this wild and precious moment to suit up as psychonauts, walk to the launch pad, enter the space capsule, settle into our seat breathing deeply through our one heart as the countdown proceeds… 10, smile… 9, hands on heart… 8, breathe in… 7, down into belly… 6, hold… 5, hold… 4, exhale… 3, release… 2, empty… 1, relax deeper and deeper with every deep breath… blast in…

take a look around as we descend deeper and deeper into the inner space of being… look into the window of your soul with your inner eyes taking in all the beauty, feeling gratitude for this wild and precious moment of having everything that is needed fueled by wonder and awe as your eyes adjust to seeing everything as one, real-eye-sing we are swimming in a sea of love energy…

notice a bright light pulling us into a golden waterfall of luminescence lighting up every wild molecule to vibrate at the frequency of cosmic hum singing us into ecstasy, rainbow harmony… breathe in the bliss and listen, listen, listen for your heartsong calling us into deeper communion of giving and receiving for nothing ever goes one way… breathing in beauty, breathing out compassion… breathing in blessing, breathing out gratitude… injoy as many wild and precious moments here gnowing you are always welcome in the field of flow to rest in the river of life, in the ocean of being and becoming… always being love, always becoming love…

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 10 – Day 208 – 7/12/2023

THE INNER IS FOUNDATION OF THE OUTER
THE STILL IS MASTER OF THE RESTLESS
THE SAGE TRAVELS ALL DAY
YET NEVER LEAVES HER INNER TREASURE.”

“Empty yourself of everything.  Let the mind rest at peace.  The ten thousand things rise and fall while the Self watches their return… Returning to the Source is stillness, which is the way of Nature.”

in this sacred moment of eternity celebrating the astonishing light of our interbeing and honoring the movement of great turning calling us to come home to the silence of our one heart, i am re-treating around the eternal flame in a dark dream cave where a peaceful stream flows… it is as if i’m in a float tank sans outer sensory stimulation… i re-member five decades ago experiencing a great awakening after real-eye-sing original sin is separation and immediately seeing a clear vision of true reality as the original blessing of oneness… yes, LaoTzu, many thousands and thousands of miles have i traveled in the intervening turns ‘round the sun yet never leaving this inner treasure…

eight years ago on this very day, i am in a parallel rhythm metaphorically floating in the dark in a flotation tank where i begin a lucid cycling journey following behind on my bike the divine child named bliss and her father on their bicycles… i carry my singing bowl in one of my arms and i come to a space where i must stop… here, i begin a wondrous journey exploring open heart u, a dream i’ve been incubating many moons… how much fun to wander these grounds. to meet people who are drawn to be in beloved community, a sangha of the one heart of boundless love where i connect with so many other dog star offspring here on planet in this moment to guide in the opening of inner vision, intuition, to truly serve metaphorically as seeing eye dogs shining light along the pathless path…

holy synchronicity, batwoman! now, 8 years later i am living the same dream albeit this time around it is in an awakened dreamweave as today begins my 11 days of stopping the world and being wu wei to explore and surrender ever more deeply to open heart u… and like the bat people, i hang upside down in the pose of rebirth as still as pythia, the psychedelphic serpent, whispered to me to be as the way of being one with rainbow mystery… it is done, blessed bee, we are humming our way into rainbow mystery…

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 10 – Day 207 – 7/11/2023

from the Peace Alliance:

July marks the 22nd anniversary of the modern-era Department of Peacebuilding (DoP/ HR 1111) legislation, which was initially introduced on July 11, 2001 – before the Twin Towers fell exactly two months later on 9/11 – before the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – before the commonality of mass shootings in schools, theaters, clubs, festivals, supermarkets, churches and synagogues -before escalation of racially-driven hate crimes, domestic violence and bullying
DoP legislation has been introduced in every Congress since 2001.
WHAT IF?
What if we had a cabinet-level Department of Peacebuilding? “If you want to change things, it requires bravery,” said Naftali Bennett. What if our legislators took the courageous step of making peacebuilding a national priority?

We know there are ways to reduce and prevent violence and that these can be taught in our schools and communities. We know restorative practices, restorative justice, nonviolent communication, mindfulness, anger management, kindness and compassion build peace. These practices and programs are part of the Department of Peacebuilding bill.

Let’s not face saying “what if” 22 years from now. A Department of Peacebuilding will address the root causes of violence and build upon the root conditions of peace to save lives and transform our culture. “Never give up.  No matter what is happening, no matter what is going on around you, never give up.” – His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama
EDUCATE & ADVOCATE FOR PEACE
Honor the introduction of DoP legislation by educating ourselves and taking action for a DoP. Register now for “Speaking Truth with Care,” a Nonviolent Communications workshop on August 5, 2023.  Learn how to apply this to your life and to peacebuilding advocacy work. Register to attend Fall Department of Peacebuilding Advocacy Days (September 17-20, 2023) in DC orvia Zoom – what better way to celebrate the International Day of Peace?During the summer, call one, several or all Congressional offices on our Spring/ Summer DoP AMPLIFY list and ask the member of Congress to cosponsor the DoP legislation – HR 1111. If possible, make your calls in July, before Congress adjourns for the August recess.”
“If every eight-year-old in the world is taught meditation,
we will eliminate violence from the world within one generation.”

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 10 – Day 206 – 7/10/2023

in each and every sacred moment, may we reverence the mystery of cosmic flow and be fully present to whatever may come and go trusting in the web of infinite, interconnected threads woven by creatrix, source of all that is…

may we be still in the muddy waters resting gently in the ebbtide until the waters clear and the seeds begin to sprout while lotus blossoms one petal at a time and wings unfold as they dry in slow motion…

may we all befriend the pregnant pause, the space of stillpoint where we dream in the rhythm of the waves as we mother peace and birth dancing stars…

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 10 – Day 205 – 7/9/2023

welcome, well come to another of my favorite days – a day of celebrating our astonishing light of interbeing and the portal of mystic power with the Sirius stargate and the opening of the annual portal to Lions Gate… Venus as the Evening Star in Leo with her energy focalized at the crown – feel the goddess of love amplifying the vibration of love to the highest octave while Sirius, the brightest star, illuminates the night sky and is home, it is said, to the Sirians, advanced beings who heavily influenced the birth of the ancient civilization of Lemuria, the sacred space stretching from present day Mount Shasta to Hawa’ii over to the Land of Oz and to India… Lemuria, home to highly telepathic beings with the dolphin/whale people as their protectors, whispers to us to move deeper and deeper into surrender, into liberation, into grace…

ah, yes, dear Rumi, i awaken in this moment of eternity hearing that voice calling, that voice that has called for so many moons, for so many turns around the sun to turn toward what i/we deeply love for that will save me/us… in truth, it is our only option, the surrendering into love, into the dreamweave of the cosmos…

in this sacred moment of eternity, energies are pulling us magnetically inside to bear witness to the jewels lodged in the deep cavernous space in the ocean of our being… our being that is now at the halfway mark of this massively mutating turn around the sun recapitulating journeying january, the dreaming moon, with july being the re-treating into ourselves moon of the wild pilgrims, poets on a journey into a space of pregnant pause to explore inner terrain and listen for the voice of the great mother whispering words of wisdom, mothering the peace that passeth ordinary understanding, the peace that births a courageous new world of radical harmony and joy and peace and love and generosity and wonder and wisdom… now is the moment to reclaim and embody our self author-ity empowering our expanded and deepened awakening into witnessing consciousness…

how inspiring these whispered words are now at this moment of a perfect storm of crises with the root crisis, the challenging opportunity, being a psychospiritual one cataly-sing a radical transformation into wholeness, mystical union of soulful maturity and spiritual awareness…

yes, we are the ones we have been waiting for to simultaneously hold the tension of the protracted labor pains and surrender into great mystery as emergency transmutes into an emergensea of love energy for us to align, partner with and find again the creative power of fire that lights the cosmos, the all that is, in overflowing golden light…

may we all bathe in this enveloping luminescence breathing in golden light of the blue star, sirius, our spiritual sun and breathing out love and peace in ever widening circles of rhythmic waves across the cosmos into the great beyond and into the (w)hole(y) bottomless well in the center of our onedrous being…

let’s close this sacred space of ceremony by deepening into the well of our being, the watery womb with a few of Lao-Tzu’s sage words…

“The supreme good is like water,
which nourishes all things without trying to.
It flows to the low places loathed by all men.
Therefore, it is like the Tao.
Live in accordance with the nature of things.
In dwelling, be close to the land.
In meditation, go deep in the heart.
In dealing with others, be gentle and kind.
In speech, be true.
In ruling be just.
In action, watch the timing.
No fight: No blame.
One who lives in accordance with nature does not go against the way of things.
They move in harmony with the present moment,
always knowing the truth of just what to do.”

and, now dear water beings, hold a chalice of water intending it as liquid light and drink it in… closing your eyes, feel the liquid light entering into your heart and soular plexus enlightening and blessing every part of the ocean of our being at the micro and macro cosmic levels carrying the original memory and wisdom of Pachamama bringing into our being that sacred nature… we are the divine mother she lives in us, this central sun lights up our whole being shining 360 degrees around us and above and below us and thanks to this powerful element of water, of liquid light, we are light being born into light… visuali-sing ourselves shining bright for all our relations, we breathe in deeply, open our eyes and SMILE…

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 10 – Day 204 – 7/8/2023

“When we strive to make our lives, every thought, word and action, a living Wopida, we are given a great spiritual gift. For whenever our soul and the inmost chambers of our heart are filled with thanksgiving and gratitude it also naturally becomes filled with compassion, love, understanding, forgiveness, joy, happiness and oneness. When our lives are centered in this State of Consciousness, there is no room left for the experience of fear, hate, prejudice, revenge, jealousy, loneliness and disunity. There is no room for anything that separates ourselves and our oneness with our Beloved Creator, our Human Family and all Life, seen and unseen.” – Hereditary Chief, Phil Lane Jr.

well come to another day of celebrating the astonishing light of our being on the heels of acknowledging the USA’s 247th birthday a day i like to celebrate as interdependence day, a day which we are more aware than ever our cosmos needs to live daily to heal the turbulence of war, famine, homelessness, climate destruction and unprecedented inequality, inequity and injustice… it is incumbent on all our relations to re-member the road to liberation, the path of liberty and justice for all is the way of interdependence, of real-eye-sing we are one… here now the 1992 Declaration of Interdependence delivered at the Earth Summit in Rio:

THIS WE KNOW

We are the earth, through the plants and animals that nourish us.
We are the rains and the oceans that flow through our veins.
We are the breath of the forests of the land, and the plants of the sea.
We are human animals, related to all other life as descendants of the firstborn cell.
We share with these kin a common history, written in our genes.
We share a common present, filled with uncertainty.
And we share a common future, as yet untold.
We humans are but one of thirty million species weaving the thin layer of life enveloping the world.
The stability of communities of living things depends upon this diversity.
Linked in that web, we are interconnected — using, cleansing, sharing and replenishing the fundamental elements of life.
Our home, planet Earth, is finite; all life shares its resources and the energy from the sun, and therefore has limits to growth.
For the first time, we have touched those limits.
When we compromise the air, the water, the soil and the variety of life, we steal from the endless future to serve the fleeting present.

THIS WE BELIEVE

Humans have become so numerous and our tools so powerful that we have driven fellow creatures to extinction, dammed the great rivers, torn down ancient forests, poisoned the earth, rain and wind, and ripped holes in the sky.
Our science has brought pain as well as joy; our comfort is paid for by the suffering of millions.
We are learning from our mistakes, we are mourning our vanished kin, and we now build a new politics of hope.
We respect and uphold the absolute need for clean air, water and soil.
We see that economic activities that benefit the few while shrinking the inheritance of many are wrong.
And since environmental degradation erodes biological capital forever, full ecological and social cost must enter all equations of development.
We are one brief generation in the long march of time; the future is not ours to erase.
So where knowledge is limited, we will remember all those who will walk after us, and err on the side of caution.

THIS WE RESOLVE

All this that we know and believe must now become the foundation of the way we live.
At this turning point in our relationship with Earth, we work for an evolution: from dominance to partnership; from fragmentation to connection; from insecurity, to interdependence.”

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 10 – Day 203 – 7/7/7

welcome, well come to another of my favorite days – 7/7/7, the gateway of mystic power, Venus’ greates brilliance, the Sirius-Sun conjunction and Sirius stargate and the opening of the annual portal to Lions Gate… yes, Venus as the Evening Star in Leo reaches her greatest brilliance today with her energy focalized at the crown – feel the goddess of love amplifying the vibration of love to the highest octave while Sirius, the brightest star, illuminates the night sky and home, it is said, to the Sirians, advanced beings who heavily influenced the birth of the ancient civilization of Lemuria, the sacred space stretching from present day Mount Shasta to Hawa’ii over to the Land of Oz and to India… Lemuria, home to highly telepathic beings with the dolphin/whale people as their protectors and yes! 7/7 is Ringo Starr’s birthday – 83rd to be exact and it is such a day of synchrony as has been every day since soulstice with every day moving us deeper and deeper into surrender, into liberation, into grace…

ah, yes, dear Rumi, i awaken in this moment of eternity hearing that voice calling, that voice that has called for so many moons, for so many turns around the sun to turn toward what i/we deeply love for that will save me/us… in truth, it is our only option, the surrendering into love, into the dreamweave of the cosmos…

did i say already how i love this moment of eternity, this seventh day of the seventh month of joyvolution july in a year vibrating at 7 with 7 being the number of spirit vibrating at a frequency of receptivity, intuition and the divine feminine… energies pulling us magnetically inside to mine the jewels lodged in the deep cavernous space in the ground of our being… our being that is now at the halfway mark of this massively mutating turn around the sun recapitulating journeying january, the dreaming moon,  with july being the re-treating into ourselves moon of the wild pilgrims, poets on a journey into another space of pregnant pause to explore inner terrain and listen for the voice of the great mother whispering words of wisdom, mothering the peace that passeth ordinary understanding, the peace that births a courageous new world of radical harmony and joy and peace and love and generosity and wonder and wisdom… this is the sacred moment of eternity to reclaimand embody our self author-ity empowering our expanded and deepened awakening into witnessing consciousness…

with a smile mirroring our heart of joy, let’s close this sacred space of ceremony with a blessing into the sacred fire within, the inner light of great spirit residing in all our relatives: may this day be blessed with gifts, lessons, understanding and friends… may our energy be a gift to all we meet… let us be centered, healing and open facing the day with courage, kindness, insight and compassion… may we honor this day…

Poetic Peace Pilgrimage – Year 10 – Day 202 – 7/6/2023

in this pivotal moment in the usa when more and more of us are facing the music that we are a country built on genocide and slavery and injustice, in this opportune moment where we can choose a revolutionary path and walk the talk of our ideals, let us listen to the prophetic and poignant words of an abolitionist and black lives movement leader from an abridged version of a speech given 171 years ago, words so relevant today…

at that time, July 5, 1852, an estimated 3.5 million people were enslaved, comprising 14% of the population of the United States… the event where this speech was given was intended to commemorate Independence Day but was overshadowed by Douglass’ powerful oration as Douglass, who had himself escaped enslavement 14 years earlier, delivered what became one of his best-known speeches, “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” which while recognizing the lofty ideals of the nation’s founders, boldly named the hypocrisy inherent in a nation allegedly anchored in “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” yet built by Black people stolen from their homes and families and forced into slavery…

“Fellow Citizens, I am not wanting in respect for the fathers of this republic. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were brave men. They were great men, too, great enough to give frame to a great age. It does not often happen to a nation to raise, at one time, such a number of truly great men. The point from which I am compelled to view them is not, certainly, the most favorable; and yet I cannot contemplate their great deeds with less than admiration. They were statesmen, patriots and heroes, and for the good they did, and the principles they contended for, I will unite with you to honor their memory….

…Fellow-citizens, pardon me, allow me to ask, why am I called upon to speak here today? What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? Are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us? And am I, therefore, called upon to bring our humble offering to the national altar, and to confess the benefits and express devout gratitude for the blessings resulting from your independence to us?

Would to God, both for your sakes and ours, that an affirmative answer could be truthfully returned to these questions! Then would my task be light, and my burden easy and delightful. For who is there so cold, that a nation’s sympathy could not warm him? Who so obdurate and dead to the claims of gratitude, that would not thankfully acknowledge such priceless benefits? Who so stolid and selfish, that would not give his voice to swell the hallelujahs of a nation’s jubilee, when the chains of servitude had been torn from his limbs? I am not that man. In a case like that, the dumb might eloquently speak, and the ‘lame man leap as an hart.’

But such is not the state of the case. I say it with a sad sense of the disparity between us. I am not included within the pale of glorious anniversary! Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us. The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common. The rich inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity and independence, bequeathed by your fathers, is shared by you, not by me. The sunlight that brought light and healing to you, has brought stripes and death to me. This Fourth July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn. To drag a man in fetters into the grand illuminated temple of liberty, and call upon him to join you in joyous anthems, were inhuman mockery and sacrilegious irony. Do you mean, citizens, to mock me, by asking me to speak today? If so, there is a parallel to your conduct. And let me warn you that it is dangerous to copy the example of a nation whose crimes, towering up to heaven, were thrown down by the breath of the Almighty, burying that nation in irrevocable ruin! I can today take up the plaintive lament of a peeled and woe-smitten people!

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down. Yea! We wept when we remembered Zion. We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. For there, they that carried us away captive, required of us a song; and they who wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. How can we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land? If I forget thee, oh Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth.’

Fellow-citizens, above your national, tumultuous joy, I hear the mournful wail of millions! Whose chains, heavy and grievous yesterday, are, today, rendered more intolerable by the jubilee shouts that reach them. If I do forget, if I do not faithfully remember those bleeding children of sorrow this day, “may my right hand forget her cunning, and may my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth!” To forget them, to pass lightly over their wrongs, and to chime in with the popular theme, would be treason most scandalous and shocking, and would make me a reproach before God and the world. My subject, then, fellow-citizens, is American slavery. I shall see this day and its popular characteristics from the slave’s point of view. Standing there identified with the American bondman, making his wrongs mine, I do not hesitate to declare, with all my soul, that the character and conduct of this nation never looked blacker to me than on this 4th of July! Whether we turn to the declarations of the past, or to the professions of the present, the conduct of the nation seems equally hideous and revolting. America is false to the past, false to the present, and solemnly binds herself to be false to the future. Standing with God and the crushed and bleeding slave on this occasion, I will, in the name of humanity which is outraged, in the name of liberty which is fettered, in the name of the constitution and the Bible which are disregarded and trampled upon, dare to call in question and to denounce, with all the emphasis I can command, everything that serves to perpetuate slavery—the great sin and shame of America! “I will not equivocate; I will not excuse”; I will use the severest language I can command; and yet not one word shall escape me that any man, whose judgment is not blinded by prejudice, or who is not at heart a slaveholder, shall not confess to be right and just.

But I fancy I hear some one of my audience say, “It is just in this circumstance that you and your brother abolitionists fail to make a favorable impression on the public mind. Would you argue more, and denounce less; would you persuade more, and rebuke less; your cause would be much more likely to succeed.” But, I submit, where all is plain there is nothing to be argued. What point in the anti-slavery creed would you have me argue? On what branch of the subject do the people of this country need light? Must I undertake to prove that the slave is a man? That point is conceded already. Nobody doubts it. The slaveholders themselves acknowledge it in the enactment of laws for their government. They acknowledge it when they punish disobedience on the part of the slave. There are seventy-two crimes in the State of Virginia which, if committed by a black man (no matter how ignorant he be), subject him to the punishment of death; while only two of the same crimes will subject a white man to the like punishment. What is this but the acknowledgment that the slave is a moral, intellectual, and responsible being? The manhood of the slave is conceded. It is admitted in the fact that Southern statute books are covered with enactments forbidding, under severe fines and penalties, the teaching of the slave to read or to write. When you can point to any such laws in reference to the beasts of the field, then I may consent to argue the manhood of the slave. When the dogs in your streets, when the fowls of the air, when the cattle on your hills, when the fish of the sea, and the reptiles that crawl, shall be unable to distinguish the slave from a brute, then will I argue with you that the slave is a man!

For the present, it is enough to affirm the equal manhood of the Negro race… Would you have me argue that man is entitled to liberty? That he is the rightful owner of his own body? You have already declared it. Must I argue the wrongfulness of slavery? Is that a question for Republicans? Is it to be settled by the rules of logic and argumentation, as a matter beset with great difficulty, involving a doubtful application of the principle of justice, hard to be understood? How should I look today, in the presence of Americans, dividing, and subdividing a discourse, to show that men have a natural right to freedom? Speaking of it relatively and positively, negatively and affirmatively. To do so, would be to make myself ridiculous, and to offer an insult to your understanding. There is not a man beneath the canopy of heaven that does not know that slavery is wrong for him.

What, am I to argue that it is wrong to make men brutes, to rob them of their liberty, to work them without wages, to keep them ignorant of their relations to their fellow men, to beat them with sticks, to flay their flesh with the lash, to load their limbs with irons, to hunt them with dogs, to sell them at auction, to sunder their families, to knock out their teeth, to burn their flesh, to starve them into obedience and submission to their masters? Must I argue that a system thus marked with blood, and stained with pollution, is wrong? No! I will not. I have better employment for my time and strength than such arguments would imply.

…What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer; a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are, to Him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy—a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of the United States, at this very hour.

Go where you may, search where you will, roam through all the monarchies and despotisms of the Old World, travel through South America, search out every abuse, and when you have found the last, lay your facts by the side of the everyday practices of this nation, and you will say with me, that, for revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy, America reigns without a rival…

…Allow me to say, in conclusion, notwithstanding the dark picture I have this day presented, of the state of the nation, I do not despair of this country. There are forces in operation which must inevitably work the downfall of slavery. “The arm of the Lord is not shortened,” and the doom of slavery is certain. I, therefore, leave off where I began, with hope. While drawing encouragement from “the Declaration of Independence,” the great principles it contains, and the genius of American Institutions, my spirit is also cheered by the obvious tendencies of the age. Nations do not now stand in the same relation to each other that they did ages ago. No nation can now shut itself up from the surrounding world and trot round in the same old path of its fathers without interference. The time was when such could be done. Long established customs of hurtful character could formerly fence themselves in, and do their evil work with social impunity. Knowledge was then confined and enjoyed by the privileged few, and the multitude walked on in mental darkness. But a change has now come over the affairs of mankind. Walled cities and empires have become unfashionable. The arm of commerce has borne away the gates of the strong city. Intelligence is penetrating the darkest corners of the globe. It makes its pathway over and under the sea, as well as on the earth. Wind, steam, and lightning are its chartered agents. Oceans no longer divide, but link nations together. From Boston to London is now a holiday excursion. Space is comparatively annihilated. Thoughts expressed on one side of the Atlantic are distinctly heard on the other.

The far off and almost fabulous Pacific rolls in grandeur at our feet. The Celestial Empire, the mystery of ages, is being solved. The fiat of the Almighty, “Let there be Light,” has not yet spent its force. No abuse, no outrage whether in taste, sport or avarice, can now hide itself from the all-pervading light…”

america is not yet what she was proclaimed to be, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” have become hypocrisy while black Americans are continuously brutalized, while the money runs out and the rent is due for 140 million poor and low-income folks and while disease disproportionately affects and devastates black and native american communities and essential workers are sacrificed to this system…

so let us commit to and act from our true nature of generosity and cooperation and compassion to weave the tapestry of a country and a world understanding no one is free until we all are free living liberty and justice for all…
